On November 21, X Display Company (XDC), a developer of display semiconductor equipment, announced its collaboration with Lumileds to develop a 140 PPI Micro LED prototype display, driven by Micro IC technology.
Groundbreaking Technology for Mobile Devices
This groundbreaking technology enables the application of Micro LED displays in mobile consumer products such as smartwatches, smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.
Advantages of Micro IC and Micro LED
According to reports, the Micro IC enables the display backplane architecture to be more flexible and energy-efficient. The new Micro LED display features an economical and energy-saving design, utilizing a cluster-driven system and Micro LEDs measuring only 13×20 μm². This setup achieves a peak brightness of 2360 cd/m², delivering excellent clarity, color, and contrast.
High Production Yields and Large-Scale Potential
Both the Micro IC and Micro LED are manufactured using state-of-the-art production equipment. Notably, the mass transfer process used to develop these prototype products achieves a 99.9998% yield for Micro LED subpixels and a 99.992% yield for Micro IC transfers, both of which are now ready for large-scale mass production.
Lumileds Embraces XDC’s Breakthrough Technology
Lumileds stated that XDC’s mass transfer, bonding, and display driving technology offer new opportunities to revolutionize the display industry. Lumileds has successfully implemented Xdisplay-drivingDC’s Micro LED transfer technology into its own LED mass production facilities. Together, Lumileds and XDC aim to set new standards for the Micro LED industry and drive the development of mobile display technologies.

Long-Term Collaboration to Meet Market Demands
XDC further emphasized that this long-term partnership will deliver the Micro LED displays needed by customers in the mobile device sector. XDC is a technology developer that licenses intellectual property and sells Micro IC, Pixel Engine components, and micro-transfer equipment, fueling the development of next-generation displays.
Lumileds Continues to Innovate in Micro LED Technology
Lumileds is an expert in LED and Micro LED technology innovation and solutions, serving markets in automotive, display, lighting, mobile devices, and other industries requiring light sources. In recent years, Lumileds has made breakthroughs in areas such as Micro LED external quantum efficiency and InGaN red LED efficiency, continuing its research in the Micro LED field.
