Shiftall’s Latest VR Innovation
Recently, Japanese headset hardware manufacturer Shiftall announced that pre-orders are now open for its latest VR glasses, the MeganeX Superlight 8K, priced at $1,899, with expected delivery between February and March of next year.
Cutting-Edge Display Technology
The MeganeX Superlight 8K features two 1.35-inch Micro OLED screens, delivering an impressive contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and covering 95% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. With a refresh rate of 90Hz, the device offers 4K resolution per eye, totaling 27.27 million pixels, surpassing the resolution of other major VR devices like the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3.
Lightweight Design and Advanced Adjustments
Weighing less than 185 grams, the MeganeX Superlight 8K is incredibly lightweight. It is equipped with dual microphones, an electric Interpupillary Distance (IPD) adjustment system, and supports refractive correction from 0D to -7D.
Shiftall’s Legacy and Ownership
Shiftall, originally incubated by Panasonic, was sold to Tokyo-based company Creek & River earlier this year. In January, Panasonic transferred ownership of the VR-focused company. Previously, Shiftall launched the MeganeX headset, which supports 6DOF and features dual 1.3-inch Micro OLED displays from Kopin with a resolution of 2560×2560 per eye. It also incorporates a Pancake optical module designed by Panasonic.
High Performance Hardware Requirements
Notably, the MeganeX Superlight 8K requires a high-performance GPU for optimal performance. It supports the following GPUs: NVIDIA RTX Ampere Architecture Series, NVIDIA Turing GPU Architecture, NVIDIA Ada Generation GPU, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or higher. Currently, the product does not support AMD Radeon series graphics cards.
Physical Pass-through Offers Excellent Visibility
You feature a physical flip-up mechanism structure that allows one-handed lifting and securing above the forehead. Whether for creator use-cases alternating between Blender/Unity and VR spaces, quickly sharing photos on SNS or Discord, you can use your physical eyes’ response and resolution. It’s no frustration compared to camera based pass-through. Conversing with colleagues is as easy as lifting and lowering sunglasses for business use. FlipVR controllers allow seamless transitions between reality and VR space without releasing the controllers – flip the controllers, then flip up the MeganeX superlight 8K, and that’s it.
IPD Adjustment and Diopter Adjustment
This ultra-compact, super-lightweight body incorporates a 58mm-72mm motorized interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment. It is easily adjustable while viewing VR via a controller or PC app. The PC app supports one-click IPD adjustment by numerical input, eliminating tediously repeated button presses when sharing among multiple users in business settings or families. Additionally, it supports diopter adjustment with a diopter range of 0D to -7D, allowing precise, sharp visual experiences for most users with up to 20/100 myopia without additional lenses. The focus adjustment dial is on the outer casing for fine-tuning while viewing VR content. For those with hyperopia, astigmatism, or myopia beyond 20/10, please use the MeganeX superlight 8K-specific add-on prescription lens sold separately (Will announce soon). These add-on prescription lenses attach magnetically for easy installation when shared among multiple users.
Adjustment Mechanism Accommodates Various Face Shapes
Correct positioning of lens positioning eyes is crucial for VR headsets using pancake lenses. Our unique adjustment mechanism allows for customization of the forehead pad angle and the distance between the lenses and the face, fitting various facial structures and accommodating differences in forehead angles and eye depth.
Comfortable Even When Lying Down
We’ve achieved a structure without hard plastic or metal components on the temporal or occipital regions. This eliminates discomfort even when lying down during extended VR sessions – another feature made possible by the ultra-lightweight design. The forehead pad, which may wear or get dirty with long-term use, is easily removable and replaceable (sold separately as an optional accessory later). We’ve also pre-prepared holes at the top of the forehead pad for adding a top strap, allowing easy customer customization based on head shape or use case (top strap not included).
USB Type-C Expansion Port for Connecting Earphones and More
The bottom of the unit provides a USB Type-C expansion port.
While the MeganeX superlight 8K features high-performance built-in dual microphones, we’ve omitted speakers, recognizing that audio preferences vary. This expansion port lets you connect your preferred audio devices, such as USB earphones or headphones. It connects directly to the PC via USB 2.0, enabling earphone mics and the potential connection of facial or hand tracker.
SteamVR Tracking Compatible
SteamVR tracking method uses Steam base stations 1.0/2.0, enabling high-precision head tracking that is less affected by the environment, e.g., darkness. It is compatible with your existing FlipVR, Valve Index, or VIVE controllers. A dedicated X2 dongle (USB connection) for connecting two controllers is also included.
Handheld Pole Adapter for Quick VR Experience
We recognize the frequent need for quick VR space checks without controllers for personal and business use, so we’ve included a handheld pole adapter.
This adapter, attachable to the bottom of the unit, features a 1/4-20 UNC female thread used in camera tripods. A camera monopod allows quick VR experiences, like looking through a magnifying glass: Multiple-person 3D space checks or 3D content experiences at exhibitions.
