Sapien Semiconductor, a company specializing in next-generation Micro LED display driver ASIC products, announced on the 21st that it has signed a 4.4 billion KRW (approximately $3.06 million) contract with a Micro LED microdisplay engine manufacturer to develop complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) backplane technology.
Sapien Semiconductor is a fabless company that designs driver ICs for Micro LED pixel arrays, holding around 150 global patents. The company went public in February.
The CMOS backplane solution is specifically designed for use in Micro LED display engines for wearable devices such as AI-powered smart glasses. It is known for its ultra-small size and ultra-low power consumption, making it the preferred choice for these applications. Sapien Semiconductor is the only company globally capable of producing over 4,000 Micro LED display modules on a single 12-inch wafer, with pixel sizes as small as 3 microns.
With this contract, Sapien Semiconductor aims to deliver ASIC semiconductor samples by the first half of next year and begin mass production in the second half. The developed product is expected to supply not only Korean companies but also firms in Greater China and North America. Additionally, the order is anticipated to lead to further contracts from customers in North America, Europe, and Asia.
