According to early 2023 reports from South Korea, Samsung Display had launched a new project to develop Micro LED wearable displays, aiming to complete development by the end of 2023 and supply them to major wearable device manufacturers such as Apple or Samsung Electronics.
More recent reports indicate that Samsung Electronics is currently developing a Galaxy smartwatch featuring Micro LED technology, with plans for a 2025 release. However, following Apple’s cancellation of its own Micro LED wearable project, Samsung is also considering whether to cancel or delay its Micro LED smartwatch project.
Apple’s recent exit from the Micro LED project has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the display industry, raising the possibility that Samsung may face similar challenges, such as the realization that Micro LED technology may not yet be ready for mass production in consumer electronics.
While Micro LED offers higher brightness, better efficiency, and longer lifespan compared to OLED, these advantages have yet to justify the high costs associated with the technology.
On the other hand, Apple’s withdrawal could be good news for companies like Samsung Display, as it allows them to focus on developing Micro LED displays for future Apple wearable devices. Besides Samsung, other display manufacturers such as PlayNitride, AUO, Visionox, and TCL are also working on wearable Micro LED displays.
