On March 7, South Korean media outlet Chosunbiz reported that Samsung Display CEO Joo-Sun Choi announced that Micro OLED display technology will be officially commercialized by 2027-2028.
Micro OLED, or Silicon-based OLED (OLEDoS), is a miniature display technology that integrates OLED light-emitting materials onto a silicon-based semiconductor driving circuit. It has already been used in devices like Apple’s Vision Pro.
During a special lecture at KAIST University in South Korea, Choi shared with reporters that the market potential for Micro OLED is substantial. However, it will still take 3 to 4 years for this XR-focused display technology to reach commercialization.
Choi further mentioned that in the next two to three years, Samsung Display will invest heavily in human resources and R&D for Micro OLED, aiming to introduce solutions that are more competitive than those of its rivals.
Last year, Samsung Display acquired U.S.-based Micro OLED R&D company eMagin for $218 million in an effort to advance RGB OLEDoS technology. This move is widely seen as a bid to secure future display panel orders for Apple’s upcoming XR devices.
Regarding the overall display industry, Choi noted that the market has hit its bottom and is beginning to recover. He highlighted the growing demand for OLED displays in IT products, but expressed caution about the smartphone sector, which faces greater challenges. As a result, he maintains a neutral stance on the industry’s recovery prospects.
Choi also emphasized that compared to the semiconductor field, there is a lack of awareness among Korean students about the display industry, which has impacted companies’ ability to attract talent.
