Samsung Electronics has disbanded its LED business under the Device Solutions (DS) division. What is Micro LED?

However, the technology still faces significant technical challenges, and its high price point makes it difficult for widespread adoption.
Market Growth Projections for Micro LED
Market research firm Omdia predicts that the global inorganic light-emitting display market, including Micro LED, will grow from $100 million USD in 2024 to $9 billion USD by 2030. Growth is expected to accelerate thereafter, reaching $32 billion USD by 2035, $58 billion USD by 2040, and $80 billion USD by 2045. Specifically, the shipment of Micro LED wafers is expected to increase from 200,000 units in 2024 to 2.1 million units by 2026, ultimately reaching 36.5 million units by 2030.
Samsung’s Micro LED Expansion
Since the launch of its first commercial Micro LED TV in 2019, Samsung has expanded the size range of Micro LED TVs from 76 inches to 140 inches, with custom sizes and aspect ratios available based on customer requirements. In January 2024, Samsung showcased its transparent Micro LED sample at CES 2024 for the first time.

Competition in the Micro LED Space
Besides Samsung, LG Electronics also sees Micro LED TVs as a key component of its B2B strategy. The company has already launched LG Magnit, a Micro LED TV series tailored for boardrooms, virtual production, and high-end home theater needs. Additionally, LG plans to launch its next-generation Micro LED TVs in 2024, incorporating AI throughout the production process and image quality rendering.
As Samsung continues to develop its Micro LED business and undergo large-scale organizational restructuring, the question arises whether the company can compete with leading players in the Micro LED field from China Taiwan and Mainland China.
