On December 8, Belgian quantum dot color conversion developer QustomDot announced that it had successfully raised €5 million ($5.3 million USD) in Series A funding. Participants in this round included Noshaq, EIC Fund, Qbic Fund, Venture Capital, PMV, and VIGO Venture.
Quantum dots, semiconductor nanocrystals with unique optical properties, have broad applications in areas such as displays, solar cells, and biomedicine.
QustomDot specializes in InP-based quantum dot color conversion technology, aiming to develop full-color Micro LED displays. The team integrates quantum dot synthesis, surface engineering, and ink/photoresist formulations for the patterning of color conversion layers in Micro LED displays.
The company has stated that its goal is to produce high-quality, high-brightness Micro LED displays and accelerate the commercialization of quantum dot-enabled Micro LED applications in products like smartwatches and AR glasses.
In recent years, QustomDot has collaborated with several LED companies to advance Micro LED technology:
- In 2022, QustomDot partnered with French 3D GaN LED technology developer Aledia to jointly develop full-color Micro LED technology aimed at solving large-size display and luxury TV applications.
- In August 2022, QustomDot teamed up with AR glasses Micro LED display developer MICLEDI to develop color Micro LED microdisplays based on quantum dot color conversion technology.
- In May 2023, QustomDot, alongside nanoprinting company XTPL, joined the EU-supported BAMBAM project to focus on developing printed flexible Micro LED displays.
