On January 9th, Plessey, a UK-based Micro LED microdisplay developer, in collaboration with the renowned tech giant Meta, announced the joint development of the world’s brightest red Micro LED display, designed for AR glasses.
This display is capable of delivering up to 6,000,000 nits of brightness at high resolution (<5 microns), with a low power consumption feature. It overcomes key technical challenges, paving the way for the development of the next-generation computing platforms.
About Plessey’s Focus on Micro LED Microdisplay
Plessey is focused on developing ultra-high resolution Micro LED displays for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices.
In 2020, Meta and Plessey signed an exclusive agreement, wherein Meta purchased all AR displays produced by Plessey. Furthermore, Plessey assisted in the research and development of Micro LED displays. According to reports, Plessey’s Micro LED displays combine ultra-high-density RGB pixel arrays with high-performance CMOS backplanes, offering ultra-high brightness, low power consumption, and high frame rate image sources for AR/VR headsets.
Future Collaborations
As part of a long-term commercial agreement, Plessey will continue to work with Meta to support the development of microdisplay prototypes and new technologies for the XR field.
According to Plessey, the collaboration with Meta marks a significant breakthrough in the development of AR technology. With the world’s brightest red Micro LED display, the industry is one step closer to making AR glasses a mainstream reality.
