When shopping for a TV, you’ve probably seen both MiniLED and OLED options. Are they different, or is it just another way to make you spend more money? Although both technologies are popular in the display market, they are not the same.
MiniLED is an upgraded version of traditional LCD technology. LCD, which has been the standard for conventional TVs, uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) as a backlight source. LCD displays are affordable and, due to the larger backlight tubes, offer a more uniform pixel grid, improving viewing angles. However, they tend to have poor image quality and high energy consumption.
Enter LED technology, which replaced the larger CCFLs with smaller, more energy-efficient light sources. LED technology allows for more precise pixel control, offering better image clarity and quality. In essence, LED is an improvement over LCD in terms of visual performance. However, as consumer demand for ultra-high-definition (UHD) content grew, even LED and LCD technologies began to fall short. This led to the development of MiniLED and OLED.
How MiniLED Improves upon LCD
MiniLED is an upgrade over traditional LCD, using smaller light sources (or “mini-LEDs”) to provide finer local dimming control. This results in enhanced contrast and brightness levels, which significantly improve the viewing experience compared to regular LED or LCD.
OLED’s Self-Emissive Advantage
On the other hand, OLED technology takes a different approach by eliminating the need for a backlight. Instead, each pixel emits its light, resulting in true black levels and greater contrast. OLED displays also provide superior color accuracy and richness, making colors appear more vibrant and lifelike.
However, OLED displays come at a premium cost. Due to their high manufacturing costs, many TV manufacturers pulled back from producing OLED models around 2022. As a result, OLED TVs are now pricier and have fewer models available compared to MiniLED TVs. While MiniLED still offers a great viewing experience, it lags behind OLED in terms of image quality, viewing angles, and eye comfort.
Which Should You Choose?
If you have a larger budget and prioritize top-tier picture quality, OLED is the way to go. However, if you don’t watch TV frequently or don’t require the highest quality visuals, MiniLED will more than suffice.
