Micro LED Industry Remains Promising
Apple’s recent decision to cancel its Micro LED project with AMS Osram has created significant ripples in the display industry, prompting Micro LED developers to closely observe the potential impact of this move. Despite this uncertainty, Chinese Micro LED developers, Tianma Microelectronics and Konka, have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing their Micro LED projects and maintaining a positive outlook on the industry’s future.
Konka‘s Continued Investment in Micro LED
Konka’s General Manager, Xiao Junlong, emphasized that the company has invested over $275 million USD in Mini LED and Micro LED technologies. Despite concerns from international companies regarding these displays, Konka remains dedicated to Micro LED development.
Xiao believes that Micro LED will continue to play a crucial role in fields such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, smartwatches, and automotive transparent screens.
Konka’s Vertical Integration and Product Innovations
Konka has vertically integrated its supply chain, utilizing Aixtron’s MOCVD systems to manufacture its own Micro LED chips. As early as 2019, Konka announced the establishment of a $365 million USD Micro LED R&D center in Chongqing and launched large Micro LED displays under its high-end sub-brand “APHAEA,” including 118-inch 4K and 236-inch 8K modular displays.
By 2023, Konka unveiled a 59-inch flat Micro LED TV prototype, the smallest Micro LED TV displayed to date, and introduced a Micro LED smartwatch, which is yet to be released.
Tianma‘s Perspective on Micro LED’s Challenges and Opportunities
On the other hand, Xi Kuirui, Vice President of Tianma’s Micro LED Research Institute, noted that the current Micro LED technology is expensive, inefficient, and power-intensive, making it less suitable for smartwatches. However, he believes that once Micro LED achieves industrialization, it will open up numerous opportunities. “The timing of Micro LED breakthroughs is uncertain, but Tianma will certainly be involved,” he stated.
Tianma’s Developments and Future Plans
In 2022, Tianma announced the launch of a $165 million USD full-process Micro LED pilot production line in Xiamen. Last year, the company showcased a fully transparent Micro LED display, featuring an 8.75-inch panel with low-reflection Micro LEDs and a 9.38-inch high-brightness (1,500 nits) panel with adjustable transparency. In 2023, Tianma released a 1.63-inch, 403 PPI Micro LED display aimed at wearable devices and small mobile terminals.
