    Micro-LED Pilot Production Line: TCL CSOT and Sanan Invest 42 Million USD

    Micro-LED production line development has reached a new milestone as TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. (TCL CSOT) and Sanan Optoelectronics complete the construction of a pilot production line for Micro-LED displays, with a total investment of 42 million USD. This production line, managed by their joint venture, Xiamen Extremely Display Technology Co., Ltd., is expected to begin trial production by the end of this year, with plans to scale up to mass production within the next two years.

    Focus on Micro-LED Production Line for Display Technologies

    In December 2020, TCL CSOT and Sanan Optoelectronics established a joint venture, Xiamen Extremely Display Technology Co., Ltd., specifically to innovate in the Micro-LED production line for display technology. This venture focuses on developing and enhancing mass transfer, bonding, inspection, and repair technologies essential for Micro-LED displays that utilize TFT backplanes. By leveraging both parent companies’ expertise and resources, Extremely Display aims to advance engineering processes required for large-scale production of new Micro-LED displays, particularly in handling intermediate stages from chip creation to final display.

    Micro-LED chips, being extremely small and requiring high precision, are not suitable for traditional transfer technologies. Therefore, each stage of the Micro-LED production line—from chip inspection and bonding to potential repair—requires meticulous testing. Key parameters like chip brightness, wavelength uniformity, consistency of optoelectronic characteristics, and the absence of visible defects must be evaluated to determine the correct repair techniques. Testing and repair are vital technological challenges that must be addressed to ensure the successful production of high-quality Micro-LED displays.

    Advances in Micro-LED Production Line Technology

    The Micro-LED Display Technology Research and Development Center project of Extremely Display received approval from the Xiamen Huli Ecological Environment Bureau on July 22, 2021. This approval included an annual production capacity of 1,056 G4.5-generation Micro-LED display panels and an initial investment of 42 million USD. In March 2024, modifications were proposed to focus on developing Micro-LED displays based on G2.5-generation TFT substrates, with an additional investment of 700,000 USD.

    According to information from Aiqicha, Xiamen Extremely Display Technology Co., Ltd. was established with a registered capital of 42 million USD. TCL CSOT holds a 55% stake in the company, while Quanzhou Sanan Semiconductor Technology Co., Ltd. holds the remaining 45%.

    Challenges and Opportunities in Micro-LED Production Line Development

    The Micro-LED production line involves several technological challenges, particularly in managing the precision required for Micro-LED chips. Due to their small size, these chips are not compatible with conventional mass transfer methods, necessitating new approaches for their precise placement and integration. Throughout each step—from initial chip inspection to the bonding and repair phases—rigorous testing is essential to maintain chip quality.

    Important performance indicators, such as chip brightness, wavelength uniformity, and consistency in optoelectronic parameters, must adhere to strict standards. Advanced repair techniques are required to minimize or eliminate defects, which is crucial for the commercialization of Micro-LED displays on a larger scale.

    Scaling Up the Micro-LED Production Line

    To meet the growing demand for high-quality Micro-LED displays, Xiamen Extremely Display Technology Co., Ltd. plans to expand its Micro-LED production line over the next two years. The newly completed pilot line is set to begin trial production by the end of this year, marking a significant step towards achieving mass production capabilities.

    By concentrating on the development of innovative Micro-LED displays, the joint venture aims to enhance its position in the global market and drive further advancements in the field. With significant investment and strong backing from both TCL CSOT and Sanan Optoelectronics, Xiamen Extremely Display is well-positioned to lead the innovation in Micro-LED production line technology.

    Strategic Investments and Future Prospects for Micro-LED Production Line

    The additional investment of 700,000 USD in March 2024 to focus on G2.5-generation TFT substrates represents a strategic pivot towards more advanced and efficient production methods. This move underscores the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of the Micro-LED display sector.

    By leveraging its combined expertise, TCL CSOT and Sanan Optoelectronics aim to overcome existing challenges in the Micro-LED production line and bring new, high-quality display technologies to market. This collaboration sets the stage for significant growth in the Micro-LED sector, driven by technological innovation and strategic investment.
