According to data released by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (similar to the Intellectual Property Office), Korea holds the largest number of patents in Micro LED displays globally, leading in related industry technology development.
Analysis of patent applications by the five major intellectual property offices (IP5)—Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and the European Union—shows that the number of patents related to Micro LED displays has nearly doubled over the past decade, increasing from 540 in 2013 to 1,045 in 2022.
In terms of patent ownership by nationality, Korea ranks first with 1,567 patents, accounting for 23.2%. It is followed by Japan (1,360 patents, 20.1%), Mainland China (1,217 patents, 18%), the United States (1,080 patents, 16%), and the European Union (750 patents, 11%). Major patent holders include LG Innotek (404 patents, 6%), Samsung Electronics (384 patents, 5.7%), Japan’s Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (315 patents, 4.7%), Samsung Display (240 patents, 3.6%), and BOE (223 patents, 3.3%).
During the same period, the annual growth rate of related patents was highest in Mainland China (37.5%), followed by the European Union (10%), Taiwan (9.9%), Korea (4.4%), and the United States (4.1%).
The Intellectual Property Office predicts that the technological competition between Korea and China over Micro LED displays will intensify.
