Successful Completion of Series A Funding Round
On March 13, it was reported by foreign media that MICLEDI, a developer of wafer-free Micro LED technology for AR applications, announced the completion of a $25 million Series A funding round. This funding was backed by venture capital firm imec. xpand, private equity firm PMV, the Belgian research center IMEC, Belgian bank KBC, and the Federal Holding and Investment Company of Belgium (SFPIM).
Expanding Capabilities with New Funding
With the Series A funding, along with earlier grants and non-dilutive funding from the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (VLAIO), MICLEDI’s total fundraising has now reached nearly $30 million. The latest funding will be utilized to expand the team, design and develop active backplane ASICs, and create fully functional Micro LED display modules for AR glasses. Additionally, the funds will support collaboration agreements with customers, ensuring that MICLEDI can meet the rising demand for immersive display applications from Tier 1 clients and partners.
Innovations in Micro LED Microdisplays
Founded in 2021, MICLEDI developed the industry’s first 300mm CMOS manufacturing platform to create Micro LED arrays for AR glasses, significantly improving resolution, brightness, and image quality for Micro LED microdisplays.
MICLEDI has showcased several Micro LED microdisplay products based on its 300mm CMOS platform, including red, green, and blue high-definition Micro LED arrays, and the industry’s first Micro LED devices featuring integrated microlenses for pixel-level beam shaping. Additionally, they have developed 630nm red GaN Micro LEDs with a full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of 50nm and 653nm AlInGaP red Micro LEDs with a FWHM of 9nm.

Strategic Partnerships to Enhance AR Display Technology
In 2022, MICLEDI reached an agreement with GlobalFoundries (GF) to integrate its technology with GF’s 22FDX® platform, providing ultra-high-resolution displays and advanced imaging technology to meet future AR glasses’ strict requirements. This collaboration aims to deliver high AR visual detail and color display.
MICLEDI has transferred its Micro LED manufacturing process to GF’s CMOS wafer fabs and is leveraging ASIC backplanes designed with GF’s advanced CMOS technology. In August 2022, MICLEDI also partnered with QustomDot, a developer of Micro LED display color conversion technology, to create color Micro LED microdisplays using quantum dot color conversion.
