According to the latest report from DSCC, “Micro LED Display Technology and Market Outlook,” published on November 27, the market forecast has significantly changed due to Apple’s cancellation of the Micro LED Apple Watch. Previously, wearable devices were expected to be the largest application for Micro LED displays, but they have now dropped to the third position, following televisions and AR/VR.

The Rise of Micro LED in Small-to-Medium Displays
In the small-to-medium Micro LED sector, Apple’s exit has allowed AUO to become the leading supplier of Micro LED smartwatches, providing panels to TAG Heuer and Garmin.
DSCC notes that while AUO has successfully improved Micro LED yields in 2024 and plans to reduce costs further next year, the price of Micro LED displays is still expected to remain much higher than that of OLED. However, Micro LED still holds strong market potential in high-end or professional devices. As a result, DSCC has revised its panel shipment forecast for AUO upward.
Expanding Micro LED Applications in Automotive and AR/VR
Moreover, panel manufacturers, including AUO, are expanding the use of Micro LED technology into the automotive sector. As a premium alternative to LCD or OLED, Micro LED displays offer more possibilities for innovative designs. In the AR/VR space, some smart glasses are already utilizing Micro LED displays, known as “LEDoS” (LED on Silicon), which are built using SiC MOS substrates.
Recently, Meta showcased a prototype of its Orion smart glasses, which feature Micro LED displays and SiC light guide plates. However, the Orion remains a conceptual device and has not yet entered mass production. DSCC points out that while Micro LED is seen as a key technology for future smart glasses, achieving full-color displays still presents challenges.
Micro LED Television Market Dynamics
In the Micro LED TV sector, Samsung remains the market leader. Samsung has launched three models in the U.S., with starting prices reaching $110,000. Although the price is not competitive with OLED TVs, Micro LED offers the potential for much larger screen sizes, positioning it as the preferred solution for high-end home theaters. TCL has also entered the market, and its pricing could exert competitive pressure. Assuming significant price reductions year by year, DSCC forecasts that by 2026, the total shipment volume of Micro LED displays will increase ninefold compared to 2024.
