Recently, LG Display (LGD) unveiled a revolutionary stretchable Micro LED display, capable of expanding its original size by 50%. According to LGD, this is the world’s first display with such a significant stretch capability. The display features 40-micron Micro LED chips, a 12-inch size, and a 100 PPI resolution, and can stretch to an impressive 18 inches.
Progress in Stretchable Display Technology
This is not LGD‘s first venture into stretchable displays. Back in 2022, the company launched a stretchable Micro LED display with a 20% expansion capability, still using the same 40-micron chips and 12-inch, 100 PPI setup. However, LGD has now successfully more than doubled the stretch ratio.

New Technologies Behind the Breakthrough
To achieve this increased stretchability, LGD has developed several new technologies, including advanced silicon-based materials (similar to the material used in contact lenses) and a redesigned wiring structure. These improvements have allowed LGD to significantly enhance the stretching performance of its displays.
Potential Applications and Durability
While the technology is still not ready for commercialization, LGD envisions new applications for this high-performance stretchable display. The stretchable display has passed rigorous durability tests, demonstrating the ability to stretch over 10,000 times without compromising image quality. It has also withstood extreme conditions, including high and low temperatures and external shocks.
This stretchable display technology is a result of a major national research initiative in South Korea, funded by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE), which selected LGD to lead the project in 2020. The project also involved 19 South Korean companies and research institutions.
