This year marks a significant milestone for MiniLED monitors, with advancements in panel technology, backlighting, and color performance. Particularly noteworthy is the price drop: from the initial 5000-6000 RMB range at launch to now being available for just 1000-2000 RMB. It’s a clear case of “early buyers enjoy the premium experience, late buyers get discounts.”

Today, we’re taking a closer look at the HKC G27M2, a monitor that many would consider the “ideal” representation of a MiniLED display. Featuring the next-gen QD-MiniLED technology, this model offers a whopping 1152 backlight zones, enhancing transparency with the addition of a QD quantum dot nano-coating. Paired with a Fast IPS panel, 2K resolution, 180Hz refresh rate, Display HDR1000 certification, 10-bit color depth, and 97% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, this monitor offers solid performance at a price of just 1399 RMB. Let’s dive into its real-world performance.

    • Conclusion:

    Unboxing the Display:

The monitor stand uses a snap-lock design, making assembly easy and tool-free.

The base is secured with screws, ensuring stable placement.

The G27M2 is part of the HKC Nebula series and features a three-sided narrow bezel design. This gives you a wider view and reduces the “cut-off” effect when using dual monitors. The overall design is black, with a subtle red accent in the middle of the hollow stand, reflecting a classic gaming aesthetic.

The bottom bezel features the HKC logo in the center.

Turning to the back of the display, it deviates from the design language of HKC’s Falcon series, with the G27M2 showcasing sharp, angular contours, giving it a bold and powerful look.

The G logo represents the gaming-focused series.

The OSD menu uses a five-way joystick control, which feels more intuitive than traditional physical buttons.

The six-sided square base design takes up minimal desk space while providing stable support for the 27-inch screen.

The monitor stand offers multiple adjustment options: it can rotate 90° vertically, as well as be raised, tilted, and swiveled, ensuring flexibility for different use cases.

In terms of ports, it offers two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DP 1.4 port, and an audio output, which should be more than enough for most users.

    Color Performance Testing:

In Standard Mode, using the Spyder color calibration tool, the HKC G27M2 covers 97% DCI-P3, 100% sRGB, and 97% AdobeRGB color gamuts. Compared to some professional monitors we’ve tested, this is impressive, and it exceeds the color performance of most monitors in this price range.

When it comes to color accuracy, the monitor’s ∆E average is just 1.05, and the ∆E maximum is only 1.78. In general, a ∆E below 2 is considered excellent for color accuracy, confirming the significant improvement brought by the QD quantum dot technology.

In color uniformity and brightness uniformity tests with a 50% brightness setting, the maximum color deviation is just DeltaE 2.9, and the brightness deviation is 11%, both of which are commendable.

With HDR mode enabled, the peak brightness reaches 1015 nits, showcasing the display’s capability.

The G27M2 has earned Display HDR1000 certification, and the OSD menu offers both HDR Movie and HDR Game modes. The color variance between the two is minimal; the HDR Game mode provides a more natural color profile, while the HDR Movie mode appears more vibrant.

This display uses Local Dimming with direct-lit backlight control, offering 1152 backlight zones. Compared to the typical 300/500-zone backlight displays, its control is more precise, delivering superior brightness performance. Unlike other MiniLED monitors we’ve tested, the backlight zones can be adjusted across four levels (off, weak, medium, strong).

The default setting is medium. At the highest setting, dark areas may appear too dark, so we recommend using the weak or medium settings.

One common concern with MiniLED displays is the potential for halo effects. However, after testing all three backlight levels, we found that the halo effect was almost non-existent, thanks to the excellent optimization.

    Gaming Experience:

For the OD (Overdrive) response time, the monitor provides three settings: Normal, Fast, and Extreme.

With its 2K resolution and 180Hz refresh rate, playing CSGO2 was incredibly smooth, offering a responsive experience while putting minimal strain on the GPU. It delivers high frame rates and low latency for seamless gameplay.

Playing racing games like Forza Horizon 5 is equally enjoyable, with vibrant colors and responsive gameplay. Plus, the HKC exclusive DIC motion blur elimination technology eliminates screen ghosting and stutter.

Given the high brightness and impressive HDR performance of this MiniLED monitor, the best use case is HDR gaming. Many AAA games are natively designed with HDR support, making them a perfect match for HDR displays.

After enabling HDR in games, the HKC G27M2 not only boosts brightness but also reveals more detail in the dark areas. The HDR1000 effect is a noticeable improvement over regular LCD monitors.

    Conclusion:

The combination of MiniLED and QD quantum dot technology makes the HKC G27M2 an excellent choice for color accuracy and vibrancy. HKC has invested significant effort into fine-tuning this display, particularly in terms of HDR performance, which deserves high praise. The gaming experience is equally impressive with its 2K, 180Hz configuration, suitable for any game genre.

As MiniLED technology matures, larger companies like HKC are pushing the boundaries. The HKC G27M2 debuted at a price as low as 1399 RMB, offering a high-quality MiniLED monitor at an affordable price. If you’re in the market for a new display, this is definitely worth considering.
