Focuslight Technologies has initiated its new MicroLED-related project in Hefei, with a planned investment of approximately $68 million. This project, highlighted by the “Hefei Hi-Tech Release,” involves developing a photonics application solutions industrial base for semiconductor manufacturing processes. Construction has officially begun, marking a significant milestone for the company’s expansion efforts.
Located at the northeast corner of Innovation Avenue and Baiyanwan Road in the Hi-Tech Zone, the site covers around 39.8 mu (about 2.65 hectares). The project will include the construction of three production facilities and related infrastructure, spanning a total area of 79,000 square meters.
Focus on Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Technologies
Focuslight Technologies plans to leverage its expertise in the semiconductor sector to establish a strategic presence in Hefei. The new facility will bolster its current operations in laser lift-off (LLO) for solid-state lasers, laser reflow for Mini/Micro LED processing, semiconductor wafer annealing, and explore new business areas, such as solar cell applications, solid-state laser annealing for flat-panel displays, and other semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Specializing in high-power semiconductor laser components and laser optics, Focuslight serves various industries, including automotive, semiconductor manufacturing, and healthcare. The company provides core upstream components and midstream photonics solutions to a diverse customer base.
Advances in MicroLED and New Display Technologies
Focuslight has made substantial progress in semiconductor manufacturing, including innovations in chip manufacturing, laser-assisted bonding for advanced chip packaging, and emerging display technologies. In the new display sector, the company has completed the iterative development of its Mini LED repair laser system and is advancing the design of a laser system for Micro LED mass transfer, currently in the product development phase.
Global Expansion and Strategic Acquisitions
As part of its global strategy, Focuslight Technologies has established a headquarters in China with international operations. By the end of 2023, the company held overseas assets valued at 427 million yuan ($58 million), representing 16.23% of its total assets. Over the years, Focuslight has acquired several international companies to enhance its global footprint.
In 2017, Focuslight acquired LIMO GmbH, a German leader in micro-optics and beam shaping solutions. In 2022, the company purchased COWIN, a South Korean provider of equipment for display panel inspection and laser repair, for $47.8 million.
This year, Focuslight announced two significant acquisitions: In January, it completed the acquisition of SUSS MicroOptics SA, a Swiss firm specializing in micro and nano-optics, to expand its automotive projection lighting capabilities. In May, the company declared plans to acquire passive optical component assets from ams OSRAM, accelerating its entry into the automotive lighting, consumer electronics, and endoscopy markets.
Financial Growth and Future Prospects
Between 2020 and 2023, Focuslight’s annual revenue showed steady growth, reaching $49 million, $65 million, $75 million, and $76 million, respectively. Correspondingly, net profits attributable to shareholders increased to $4.8 million, $9.4 million, $17.7 million, and $12.6 million over the same period.
