On February 7, Japan‘s AR optics manufacturer Cellid announced that it has completed a $13 million (approximately ¥94.79 million) funding round through a private placement of shares.
Funding Led by Development Bank of Japan and Other Key Investors
This round of financing was led by the Development Bank of Japan Inc. and was supported by investments from the CVC Fund jointly established by Kyocera Corporation and Global Brain Corporation, as well as other entities such as More Management Co., Ltd., 15th Rock, Inc., and FFG Venture Business Partners Co., Ltd.
Cumulative Funding Reaches $33 Million
With the completion of this funding round, Cellid has now raised a total of approximately $33 million (around ¥237 million) in funding to date.
Core Business Focus on AR Glass Displays and Spatial Recognition Engines
Cellid’s core business is focused on the development of AR glasses display screens and spatial recognition engines. The company claims to have pioneered the development of the world’s largest, widest field-of-view, and lightest waveguide display technology. It has also successfully developed the world’s first full-color projection technology using plastic materials.
Recent Technological Developments
In 2021, Cellid announced the supply of an AR glasses display module sample, called Cellid Waveguide 60. This module featured a wider field-of-view waveguide and a 1.2 cubic centimeter ultra-compact single-green Micro LED projector.
In January 2023, Cellid released an optical module for AR glasses, also equipped with a Micro LED projector, offering a 60-degree field of view.
In November 2024, Cellid launched a reference design for AR glasses, which utilizes an optical perspective waveguide display. By adopting the company’s proprietary waveguide technology, Cellid successfully developed AR glasses that look and feel like regular eyewear, weighing only about 58 grams. Compared to traditional head-mounted displays, these glasses significantly reduce eye fatigue caused by prolonged use.
Implications of the Latest Funding
The latest funding will enable Cellid to strengthen the development of its core AR glasses components, such as micro-projectors and waveguides, along with expanding its reference designs and associated business.
