On November 6, 2024, BOE HC SemiTek officially launched the world’s first 6-inch Micro LED mass production line at the Micro LED Wafer Manufacturing and Packaging Testing Base in Zhuhai, Jinwan District. This project marks the world’s first scaled production line for Micro LED and the first-ever 6-inch Micro LED production line globally.
Project Support and Timeline
Supported by the Zhuhai Municipal Party Committee, the Zhuhai Municipal Government, the Jinwan District Party Committee, the Jinwan District Government, and Huafa Group, the project broke ground in late July 2023. In just 16 months, the production line was completed, passing major milestones such as topping out, equipment installation, and product lighting. This achievement makes BOE HC SemiTek the first to establish an automated production line for Micro LED chip manufacturing, with notable technological advantages in MPD (Micro LED Pixel Devices) packaging, mass transfer, and color conversion.
Technological Innovation and Advantages
The Micro LED Wafer Manufacturing and Packaging Testing Base is an important platform for BOE HC SemiTek to advance the development of new display technologies. The production focuses on Micro LED wafers and pixel devices, primarily used in ultra-large and ultra-small high-definition display applications, including large commercial displays, AR/VR headsets, and wearable devices. Once fully operational, the production capacity is expected to reach 24,000 6-inch Micro LED wafers and 45,000,000 Micro LED pixel devices annually.
Micro LED: The Future of Display Technology
As a core industry in the next-generation information technology sector, the new display industry is vital to accelerating the development of new productive forces. It is also one of Zhuhai’s key strategic emerging industries. Micro LED, as a significant new display technology, boasts several technical advantages, including high brightness, high contrast, fast response times, low power consumption, high reliability, and long lifespan. Compared to other technologies like LCD, OLED, and Mini LED, Micro LED offers superior performance in image resolution, battery life, flexibility in design, environmental adaptability, and supply chain compatibility.
Strategic Impact and Future Growth
The successful completion and launch of this project fills a gap in Guangdong and even China’s new display industry. It will help Zhuhai seize the opportunity to lead the development of “ultimate display technology,” creating a globally competitive new display industry cluster. This will attract more upstream and downstream companies to settle in Zhuhai, contributing to the creation of a “Ultra High-Definition Display Micro LED Industrial Base” in the Greater Bay Area.
