On January 14, 2025, the AMTC 20th Anniversary Celebration and Global Strategic Partners Summit was successfully held in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China. Over 1,000 distinguished guests from various sectors including government, business, industry, academia, and media gathered to witness AMTC’s moment of glory.

This conference served as a pivotal moment, both reviewing the achievements and progress AMTC has made in the past 20 years and defining its future direction.

    • Focus Area 1: Core Business
    • Focus Area 2: One Chip, Three Chains
    • Focus Area 3: Fully Embracing the New Era
    • Focus Area 4: Transformation and Upgrading

    Focus Area 1: Core Business

SMTC has integrated technologies in sapphire substrate processing, nano-structured substrates, high-quality compound semiconductor materials growth (such as gallium nitride (GaN) and gallium arsenide (GaAs)), and high-efficiency RGB LED chip production processes. As a result, it has covered key applications in mainstream fields including general lighting, high-end lighting, television backlighting, and Mini/Micro LED displays, making it the world’s largest digital intelligent LED chip production base in terms of scale.

LED chips primarily use sapphire substrates, and the technology is aligned with the compound semiconductor processes of GaAs, SiC, and GaN. Following the homogeneity of substrate technology and the coverage of full-spectrum technology, SMTC has continuously evolved into a compound semiconductor enterprise. This expansion includes applications in fields like optical communications, RF devices, and power devices, unlocking boundless potential in the compound semiconductor sector.

Focus Area 2: One Chip, Three Chains

At this key 20th anniversary juncture, SMTC President Ou Jun announced that the company would continue to strengthen its global manufacturing base, deepen its high-tech transformation, and advance the “One Chip, Three Chains” strategy.

    • leverage the technological upgrade of its chip business to drive the entire group’s high-tech transformation. By upgrading the semiconductor chip technology, it will extend the industrial chain and business reach, creating a diversified, high-value ecosystem and turning SMTC into a robust, flourishing industrial giant.
    • “Three Chains” refers to the industrial chains that SMTC focuses on, including:
      • Smart Terminal Industry Chain: Comprising home digital gateways, video content operations, TV ODM, and Mini LED TV.
      • Full LED Industry Chain: In the Mini/Micro LED era of ultra-high-definition displays, SMTC has established an extensive industry chain covering upstream Mini LED backlight chips, Mini/Micro RGB chips; midstream Mini COB/POB packaging; and downstream COB panels. SMTC is now one of the largest global Mini/Micro LED semiconductor display solution providers, with applications across automotive, tablets, monitors, and laptops. The company also keeps an eye on Micro COG, and Micro COF/COP technologies to ensure its leadership in emerging technologies.
      • Optical Communication Industry Chain: As a new business within SMTC, the optical communication sector has embraced historical growth opportunities with the development of AI infrastructure. The company has vertically integrated its optical communication chain, from optical chips to optical devices and optical modules, forming cost advantages and synergizing R&D and market expansion to extend into high-value application fields.

Notably, this “Three Chains” strategy is just the present. With the ongoing upgrade of the “One Chip” approach, the “One Chip, Three Chains” strategy will evolve into “One Chip, N Chains”.

Focus Area 3: Fully Embracing the New Era

With strong capabilities in compound semiconductor technology, AMTC plans to expand into more high-tech products and applications, such as laser sensors, laser communications, power devices, and RF devices. These innovations will help the company fully embrace the AI and robotics era, driving the company’s transformation and promoting industry change.

Taking AI as an example, LED business has become the company’s second growth curve. With a complete supply chain from chip to packaging to display, AMTC holds an unbeatable edge in the MLED ultra-high-definition display era. In the future, AMTC will fully integrate AI technologies, encouraging the “AI + Display” applications across more fields.

For example, in AR glasses, which offer mobility and convenience, Micro LED technology is seen as having immense potential to become the mainstream micro-display technology. SMTC, a subsidiary of AMTC, has continued to innovate in this area, releasing several Micro LED-related patents, covering packaging technology, epitaxial growth, chip design, and testing equipment, laying a solid foundation for the commercialization of Micro LED technology.

In Mini LED TVs, AI can improve picture quality and enrich human-machine interaction. AMTC subsidiary BMTC, a leading supplier of Mini LED backlight sources, has already undertaken Mini LED TV ODM business since 2023. With ongoing advancements in “AI + Mini LED Backlight”, AMTC aims to offer richer viewing experiences to consumers.

Additionally, AMTC’s video network division, Beijing Fengxing, has successfully developed AI-powered tools for content creation and promotion in the film and TV industry. Orange Star Push, a product of the company, has already launched several AI creative tools, making it one of the early pioneers of AI + industry application commercialization.

Furthermore, AMTC’s optical communication business is also embracing AI. The company is rapidly upgrading from below 100G access modules to 200G/400G/800G and beyond, to meet the growing demand for optical modules driven by AI-generated content (AIGC) and ensure continuous technological advancement.

Focus Area 4: Transformation and Upgrading

The cornerstone of AMTC’s strategic development is transformation and upgrading. The company has consistently relied on innovation to open the path to transformation and drive its upgrading journey.

Looking back, AMTC rose from its TV ODM business, then expanded along the industrial chain into the LED industry by positioning itself in TV backlight products. In 2017, the company entered the LED upstream chip segment, marking its continued expansion up the supply chain.

In 2021, VMTC was established, completing the AMTC LED full industry chain. It was also the company’s first successful venture into downstream applications based on chip-level technology strength. By 2024, the ongoing integration of the “optical chips – optical devices – optical modules” chain marked another successful application from SMTC, expanding vertically down the supply chain.

In the past 20 years, AMTC has pioneered a dual-way synergy development path, from downstream to upstream and then back to downstream. Moving forward, AMTC will continue to leverage its semiconductor chip business to spur more industry innovations, continuing its transformation and upgrading.
