Recently, four updates concerning Mini LED automotive technologies have surfaced:
Supply chain companies, Tianma Microelectronics, Refond Optoelectronics, and Longli Technology, have discussed the current state and plans of Mini LED automotive technologies during institutional research. Additionally, Tier 1 supplier Hi-Way Technology broke ground on its headquarters park project, which is expected to produce 4.2 million units of automotive smart cockpit electronics annually once completed.
Tianma: Q1 Automotive Revenue Grows by Over 40%
In a recent institutional research meeting, Tianma Microelectronics revealed that its 8.6-generation production line (TM19) will soon be operational. This line primarily focuses on automotive displays, industrial displays, and IT displays, which are key areas of growth for the company.
In Q1 2024, Tianma’s automotive display revenue increased by over 40% year-on-year and by over 10% quarter-on-quarter. LTPS automotive display shipments grew by over 200% compared to the previous year. In March, its automotive electronics business for leading international automakers achieved monthly sales exceeding 100 million RMB. The company expects accelerated growth in 2024, driven by the rapid penetration of LTPS technology in automotive displays and the expansion of its automotive electronics business for top global automakers.
Refond Optoelectronics: Gradual Application of Mini LED in Automotive Products
Refond Optoelectronics recently renewed its global patent license agreement with GE, acquiring KSF phosphor patent rights to further expand into automotive displays, Mini LED, and large backlight markets. According to its 2023 earnings report, Refond’s Mini LED backlight sales increased by 87%, while automotive LED sales rose by 56%. This year, the company plans to adjust its backlight business direction, gradually exiting the small backlight market to focus on the broader display market for 2024 and beyond.
In the automotive interior/exterior market, Refond has received AEC-Q102 certification for its products, enabling it to provide complete automotive lighting and display systems, including headlights, turn signals, ambient lighting, interior lighting, and brake lights. Refond is gradually applying Mini LED technology to automotive products, supporting full-scene applications both inside and outside vehicles.
Longli Technology: Rising Penetration of Automotive Mini LED Displays
In 2023, Longli Technology’s Mini LED automotive display products were used in instrument panels, central control screens, passenger screens, heads-up displays, rear-seat entertainment screens, rearview mirror screens, and climate control screens. In 2024, as automotive displays continue to increase in size, number, resolution, and interactivity, Longli expects Mini LED displays to gain prominence. With rising demand for smart cockpits, the penetration of Mini LED technology in automotive applications is expected to continue growing.
Hi-Way Technology: Smart Cockpit Development Base Breaks Ground
According to an announcement from the China Optical Valley on June 18, Hi-Way Technology has begun construction on its headquarters park, a smart cockpit development and industrialization base. The project will be developed in two phases, covering smart manufacturing, R&D, and residential growth zones. The first phase, with a total building area of 74,500 square meters, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with the capacity to produce 4.2 million units of various smart cockpit electronics annually. Full occupancy of the park is anticipated by December 2026.
Hi-Way’s main products include cockpit displays, cockpit domain controllers, AI interaction assistants, digital audio systems, and smart surfaces. The company has already established partnerships with major automotive brands, including NIO, Li Auto, Zeekr, Dongfeng, SAIC, and Chery.
In 2019, Hi-Way completed the development and mass production of automotive-grade ultra-narrow bezel displays. In 2020, the company independently developed the world’s first automotive-grade Mini LED backlight display and flexible OLED display. Notably, Hi-Way supplied the 10.25-inch Mini LED instrument screen and 12.3-inch Mini LED passenger screen for the SAIC Rising R7 model.
